It fascinates me that Mel Gibson is in the news once again. It seems that he is involved in custody hearings over his child. More interesting, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rob Schneider and Donald trump have refused to act or be involved in some recent Mel Gibson movies. Allegedly this is because he has been accused of domestic violence and related to some obscenity filled anti-Semitic rants. But I wonder. Roman Polanski, a self confessed child molester has no trouble commanding talent for his films. Many other actors make Gibson’s philandering look like a walk in the park, so why is Hollywood so anti Gibson?
Could it be that Hollywood is still angry about The Passion of the Christ? Sadly, today, Hollywood and the media in general are opposed to genuine Christianity.
We as Christians need to fight this attitude, and we can. We can begin by refusing to watch television or movies with anti-Christian themes, or that glorify ways of life (and basically I mean sex outside of marriage) that are not Christian. In the case of television, we need to write stations and networks, and tell they why we won’t watch their show. We need to write sponsors and tell them that we will not buy their products if they promote anti-Christian behavior. We need to monitor what our kids watch on TV and listen to, and explain to them clearly why we watch or don’t watch certain things.
Now, I do want to make it clear that I am not condoning Gibson’s behavior. I am stating that if we held the same standards to all actors that we supposedly are applying to Gibson, many of them would be out of business. I would love to have met with Gibson when he was getting divorced from his wife, and showed him the spiritual aspects of marriage and divorce. Being a good Catholic, he should know what Jesus said about remarrying after divorce. I pray that Gibson would find a good Christians mentor and counselor to help him deal with the problems he has in his life.
