After nearly two years of the hearing the Obama administration explain how amazing our lives will be once Obamacare has passed, we now find Defense Secretary Robert Gates looking for ways to cut the health benefits of our nations heroes.
I’m still waiting for Obama to deliver on his promises. Health care costs should be dropping any day now. Health care quality will increase. Obamacare will be completely deficit neutral. If you like your health care, you can keep it. Yadda yadda yadda. If we are ALL supposed to be experiencing “health care Utopia”, why is our military facing benefit cuts?
“Health care costs are eating the Defense Department alive,” Gates said in a much-noticed speech in May. Defense budget analysts say that rising health care costs will make less money available for new weapons, repairs to a worn-out arsenal and quality-of-life programs like schools on military bases.
“In the long run, it could actually limit our ability to field a military of sufficient size,” said Todd Harrison, a senior fellow for defense budget studies at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments in Washington.
Let me see if I can wrap my head around this. We can pay for Chinese prostitutes to learn how to handle their liquor, build a tunnel to help turtles cross the highway, and build a border fence on Mexico’s southern border instead of our own, but we can’t maintain the health benefits of our military retirees?
If our government can’t even maintain the health care needs of the men and women that have fought for our freedom, how could we ever let them get involved in the health care of the entire nation?
