I saw a headline today that read “US Drops Push for Israel Settlement Freeze.” It seems that the US cannot get the Israelis and the Palestinians to agree to live in peace.
During WW1 the land was under British Rule. During the 1930’s Adolf Hitler and the nation of Germany declared all those who were not of pure German blood did not deserve to live. His main objective as we all know, was to kill every Jew and wipe them off the face of the earth.
During WW2, I am not sure the world really understood the devastation and the hate that the German people had for the Jewish people. On January 27, 1945 we first saw what the Germans where doing in camp like Auschwitz-Birkenau. We got to see the way people were treated. We got to see the people that were starved to skin and bone. We got to see the gas chambers and the pit full of dead bodies.
In 1947 the United Nations proposed splitting the British territories into a Jewish state and an Arab state, but Arab states at the U.N. rejected this proposal – a decision that left Palestinians without a homeland in the Middle East.
Finally, on May 14, 1948 the United Nations made Israel an independent nation. After all the suffering they endured during the Holocaust, all they wanted was to live in peace. But you cannot live in peace when your neighbors want you dead.
Right after Israel became a nation they were attacked by the Palestinians because they did not want them there. The United Nations tried to give them a state alongside Israel but they rejected this and attacked. So what did Israel do? They protected themselves. As they were attacked they fought back, and during this war they gained a little ground. This is the land the Palestinians want back.
If Israel gave all the land back would that make the Palestinians happy? No, they have shown them that they do not want Israel to exist at all.
So how does anyone expect there to be peace? There can be no peace as long as one side wants the other side exterminated. Israel shouldn’t give in to pressure from anyone, including the United States. They have a right to survive and live in peace, but this cannot happen until their enemies decide in their own hearts that the Jewish people have the right to live, and I am not sure that’s possible. So for now, if the Israelis want to live they must fight to protect themselves and we as Americans need to stand by their side and support them.
