Using God’s name in vain usually brings to mind a person cursing another, asking God to damn someone. The definition of vain as described by Webster is as follows.
1: having no real value: idle, worthless <vain pretensions>2: marked by futility or ineffectualness: unsuccessful, useless <vain efforts to escape>3 archaic: foolish, silly4: having or showing undue or excessive pride in one’s appearance or achievements: conceited5: to no end: without success or result <her efforts were in vain>6: in an irreverent or blasphemous manner <you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain — Deuteronomy 5:11 (Revised Standard Version)>
Westboro Baptist Church portrays the word vain in the purest of forms in its attempt to spew hatred as God’s representative. The world is looking for an excuse to do what they want and Westboro gives them a reason to NOT want to run into the arms of God. While an extreme group of people completely ignores or refuses to acknowledge a creator/higher power another extreme group is playing God according to their own way. Like all lies there is some truth to what Westboro says. However any truth can be perverted and used as a weapon against the uneducated or ignorant.
If a person truly knows the Messiah called Christ then it is easy to see that Westboro is far from knowing Him. It breaks my heart so deeply to see God portrayed in such a hate filled manner by the Westboro Baptist Church. They, in all visual manner do not know Jesus Christ, Y’shua Messiah the redeemer of mankind who died on the cross paying the penalty for those who would accept that payment. Y’shua did nothing that even vaguely resembles what these people are doing.
Is it true that God is against homosexuality? Yes because it hurts mankind. It isn’t what He intended for the purpose and ultimate greatness of mankind. But does God love every human? Absolutely He does. Are there consequences for sin? Yes. But did Jesus tell anyone to attack and go after the sinner with malicious vengeance? Not once did He instruct anyone to do what Westboro is doing. Instead Y’shua instructed His followers to go out and share the good news of salvation. The GOOD NEWS isn’t that we are happy that people are suffering and ask God to pour more onto them. Proverbs 24:17 tells us “Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice.”
I want to make it clear that I do believe that sin is sin. I live my life in a way that can be judged by the word of God. I allow people to judge me accordingly without giving the clever retort, ‘You can’t judge me.’ I believe I should live a pure life because I love God and believe He is my best interest. If I share with someone who is blatantly doing something that is hurting them then I do so out of love for that person. Love doesn’t let someone kill themselves right?
Maybe Westboro hasn’t gotten the crowds of people they wanted into their congregation and now they are angry with a sinful world. There is another religious leader who did the same thing many years ago. When he didn’t get the response he wanted he retaliated and his hatred has tried to destroy the entire world. People are selfish creatures and seek their own ways unless they have chosen to submit to the true creator and Savior. No one is like Y’shua, the Christ who came in meekness but all the power of the universe, who loved when people hated Him. He was the only one to say turn the other cheek and love your enemy. What other leader has said that? If everyone truly followed his example there’d be no wars and we could live selflessly for one another. Wow what a concept. NO other leader thought this way. It isn’t a human idea.
I don’t know about you but having someone yelling horrible things about me really doesn’t gain my respect or my desire to do what they are saying. This is not in the least a proven way of good communication. God says He draws people to Himself by His love. I understand warning someone or resisting their bad behavior that engulfs a person who doesn’t want that behavior. But to viciously attack someone when they are hurting is exactly what the devil does. We as followers of Y’shua are to be a healing balm to the hurting.
The Westboro Church is acting completely in vain if they expect to bring people to know the loving Almighty God. They however, are not in vain in working with the devil to turn the masses against God. They are very fruitful in that.
One clue that they do not know the Messiah is that on their website they say Jews killed Jesus. Really? Jesus (a Jew) said that no man could take His life because He freely gave it for the sin of the world, sin that included Westboro Church misrepresenting God and spewing demonic hatred. But when unknowing people hear and see the actions of this outrageous church they want nothing to do with Christ.
I dare anyone to learn for themselves who Y’shua Messiah, Jesus Christ really is. I know Him as the one who saved me from my eternal separation from Him. My own sin and inability to perfect myself would have kept me from the perfect world He lives in. It was very evident that I needed Him to pay the price I couldn’t pay to enter heaven. I can’t understand why someone would refuse to accept that gift. I was able to exchange my vain and vile ways for a new life in Him. I don’t even desire the things I used to. The overwhelming love I have now and ability to live in that love is comparable to nothing. So how could I not want that for everyone? But if someone refuses God’s love, that does not give me the right to hate them. Instead I am instructed to pray for them. If I lift the name of Jesus, Y’shua instead of focusing on bringing people down, I am told that will bring people to Him.
As children we learn what is right and wrong and why it is harmful to us. Many stray from what they have learned knowing they are harming themselves and others, i.e. drugs, smoking, etc. While it would be a great world where everyone loved each other we cannot force anyone to do so. God gave evil people choices just like He gave those who would obey Him. Sadly, as I see it Westboro is no better than the evil they preach against. Jesus said, “Many will say, ‘Lord Lord didn’t I do this in your name?’ And I will say depart from me I never knew you.” Blindness and deception can affect anyone. While one person blatantly lives a life of sexual vulgarity and obscenity another throws stones blinded by arrogance and hatred. Both are detestable to God and He desires people to truly know Him. Simply manipulating God’s word does not make a follower.
Sin should not be tolerated but there are better ways of leading people out of that sin that damning them to hell. There is no hope in the message of Westboro Baptist Church. In Jesus there is hope until our dying breath.
Westboro Church will only reap what they sow. They sow hate; they will reap hate. Sadly though they are making God reap it too. They say “We aren’t interested in persuading you to change — that’s God’s business.” Wow what antichrist like attitude. The bible says that all of heaven rejoices when one person chooses to give their life to Christ. So what is Westboro’s motive for what they do? Y’shua said for us to go and make disciples of all people. That is a relationship that teaches not yells and attacks. They have no command of God to do what they are doing. God in the past showed his judgment and it didn’t make people better able to obey Him. So He sent Y’shua our Savior and gave us a chance to be empowered by God Himself to stop sinning. We are to obey the law to love God with all our hearts minds and strength and to love our neighbor as ourselves. There is NO law against that. People are hungry to be loved. We can show love without showing tolerance for sin. Yes there are consequences for sin and God does use pain to get our attention. But our role is reconciliation in the name of Y’shua, the Messiah. We are to reach out to the hurting.
It is true that God will not be mocked as they say but what Westboro Baptist Church fails to see is that they are guilty of exactly that. Oh it isn’t a mockery in the way that they are laughing at God but yes they pretend to act on His behalf all the while destroying what God intended in the first place. Once we know the love of Christ we won’t want to do anything against God. He intended that we would love Him and be loved by Him for all of eternity.
1Corinthians 13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
My prayer is that you would know the true and incomparable love of God through Y’shua, Messiah, Jesus the Christ.
