In mid January, Barack Obama made the startling statement that France was America’s biggest ally, despite the fact that Britain has reportedly lost nearly 350 troops in the war against the Taliban, seven times as many as France, and has over 10,000 British soldiers are serving in Helmand province, compared with just 3,850 Frenchmen.
Obama’s statement was quickly condemned in Westminster.
“I’m getting a bit fed up with the American President using terms like ‘best ally’ so loosely. It’s Britain that has had more than 300 servicemen killed in Afghanistan, not France. That to my mind is a lot more powerful than any political gesture making,” the Daily Mail quoted Tory MP Patrick Mercer, as saying.
Sadly, this insult was only the beginning.
According to recent Wikileaks cables, the Obama administration has now stabbed Britain in the back once again by agreeing to tell British nuclear secrets to Russia as part of a backroom deal made during the START treaty.
Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week.
Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.
The fact that the Americans used British nuclear secrets as a bargaining chip also sheds new light on the so-called “special relationship”, which is shown often to be a one-sided affair by US diplomatic communications obtained by the WikiLeaks website.
The State Department quickly stated that this action was just a continuation of the 1991 START treaty, but HotAir.com noted an important difference.
…they got notified under the earlier START protocols of transfers of nuclear weapons — but they didn’t get the unique identifiers, which would quantify and specify the number of weapons transferred. That’s what the British refused to accept, and apparently what we agreed to do anyway.
This is a disgraceful black eye upon our nation. The president that campaigned on mending relations with our friends and allies after the supposedly inept diplomacy of the Bush administration has managed to repeatedly betray our closest ally.
Israel should be very worried after seeing this. Obama has proven himself untrustworthy and they will have no reason to trust that America, one of their only friends, will support them the next time their democracy is threatened by Muslim neighbors.
