As you can guess, I am totally opposed to increasing the debt ceiling. Of course some of this has been a long time coming. Congress has been using social security money for other things for years which has contributed to the problem.
What then is the solution? I would start with social security. Right now, $106.000,00 is the maximum that can be taxed. The maximum will need to be dropped. It won’t cure the problem, but it will help. Second, we need to go ahead and raise the retirement age to 70 (Hey, I don’t like it, but if I am going to ask others to sacrifice, I need to sacrifice as well.) Next, people who only paid in to SS for 10 years but are getting great pensions, should only receive social security for 10 years, its only fair.
Medicare will need to be worked on as well, it will probably need to have the taxes increased, but more important is to address the increasing cost of healthcare. Obamacare did nothing to address this issue.
Next, get rid of all unconstitutional government expenditures. A good example would be the department of education. Get rid of it, let the states handle it. That is their job. We also need to get the US government out of mass transit. Again, that job belongs to the states, and municipal governments, not to the Feds.
Since to my knowledge, Congress has not declared war against Libya, we need to remove our planes, ships and whatever. There should be a major rethink of the war in Afghanistan. I do not see that we are any closer to capturing bin Laden. Maybe we should take the annual cost of the war in Afghanistan and offer it as a reward for bin Laden’s capture. Shoot, for that kind of money, I might go after him myself. I would say we need to be out of Afghanistan in one year or less. While we are on wars, it looks like the operation in Iraq has been successful, we need to be looking at the exit strategy.
While we are in the pinch, we need to minimize working on infrastructure, but we do need to maintain the Interstate highway system. That truly is a national interest.
I am sure we can make lots of other cuts (say limiting Congressmen’s and Senator’ retirements to Social Security, I am sure they can suffer on that), but I am looking for a job, so I am not as up on everything that I should be.
(for those of you wondering where I have been, for Lent, I have been concentrating on more spiritual matters)
