Jesus promised us “No man shall know the day or the hour when He shall return”! How much clearer could he be? Now, if Jesus told us He will not let us know when the end of the world will come, why are some Pastors going on nationwide broadcasts and proclaiming the end of the world on 5/21/2011? I heard one of Harold Camping’s leading pastors on Michael Medved’s show claim that this was not Harold Camping’s teachings, but what was found in the Bible. They claim because Harold has studied the Scriptures so diligently for 50 years, he cannot be wrong!
By the Grace of God, I have read most books of the New Testament 50 to 100 times and the whole Bible cover to cover about 14 times. I have studied the Scriptures and how The Holy Spirit has guided faithful Pastors over the last 2000 years in understanding Scripture. I have NEVER found the date 5/21/2011 as the day the LORD is supposed to come!
If you look up this verse in the Greek, Jesus said the same thing in the original language of the Bible as we find in our translations: “ειπεν προς αυτους ουχ υμων εστιν γνωναι χρονους η καιρους ους ο πατηρ εθετο εν τη ιδια εξουσια”
In various English translations, this verse reveals dogmatically what Christ Jesus had warned us about:
King James Bible
And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
New International Version (©1984)
He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.
New American Standard Bible (©1995)
He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;
American Standard Version
And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority.
But he said to them: It is not for you to know the times or moments, which the Father hath put in his own power:
Webster’s Bible Translation
And he said to them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
Young’s Literal Translation
and he said unto them, ‘It is not yours to know times or seasons that the Father did appoint in His own authority;
How much clearer could the LORD Jesus Christ have been for us not to be deceived by false prophecies that proclaim the exact opposite to what Jesus has said? It’s one thing for a false prophet to proclaim his own date, it’s another thing for him to proclaim that Jesus has given us this date in the Scriptures. Problem always come when we privately interpret the Bible apart from the united testimony of The Holy Spirit given to The Bride of Christ everywhere across all geographical and time boundaries.
Whenever someone brings to us a “new” doctrine, we simply have to ask if The Holy Spirit’s understanding is united with what He has revealed to the early faithful Pastors’ testimonies we have on record. This example is what we find in the Scriptures on how to determine if something is of God. We must diligently study The Scriptures but also when there is dispute among brethren, instead of forming another “new doctrine that adds to the 25,000 new denominations, look into the Scriptures and to the already confirmed word of The Holy Spirit granted to The Church in the past. If we find a worldwide gathering of brethren everywhere in a council like in Acts 15, we simply honor God by humbly accepting his already revealed testimony, rather than try to reinvent Christianity according to our own lusts or cultural limitations. If there is no united testimony from the faithful Bride of Christ, we gather together wise elders and Pastors of pastors, and prayerfully seek the voice of the Holy Spirit beyond our own denominational limitations, so we can humbly ask God for Wisdom. He has promised The Church, if we ask him for Wisdom, he will grant us (James 1:5) .
The gift of discernment is lacking when we trust one man’s “new” interpretation or one denominations or nondenominational viewpoint over what The Holy Spirit has already revealed across time and geographical boudnaries. Will Harold Camping’s followers repent when as they say, the cemeteries are not showing bones rising from the ground today? I will thank God if Haroldwill publicly repent and start humbly seeking the Wisdom beyond his denominational following and start studying what God has already revealed to the Church united, but if he doesn’t, I am hopeful that some of his followers will begin to look for a True path of following Christ and abandon any other “new” dates being set by him.
Let’s keep our eyes fixed on Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith and let’s start listening to the great cloud of martyrs and faithful witnesses of our past so we are not so easily entangled in a web of satan’s deception (Hebrews 12:1-2), because our enemy the devil is like a roaring lion seeking to devour the souls of men, and we were warned that he can even appear as angel of light to deceive some through those masquerading as apostles of Christ (2 Cor 11).
