If FACING defeat is not possible – Where is the HONOR?
If SUCCESS cannot be envisioned – How can it be ACHIEVED?
If SETBACKS equal defeat – Be glad Washington in Valley Forge did not see it that way
To those who TRUST in the LORD, all things are possible – GOOD will prevail in the end
The only political candidate or office holder whom I can trust is one who can face defeat. He must plan to win, and has no honor if he does not give it his full measure; but, if he cannot face defeat then he cannot take a principled stand against all opponents.
It is not that our leaders should be a rubber stamp of our sometimes fickle collective will; and, it is not that being responsive to the electorate means taking a poll every day; and, it is not that being brave means fighting unnecessary battles; and, it certainly does not mean being of a defeatist mentality.
It simply means that when “push comes to shove” the principled office holder does not budge on matters of high principle. This kind of person will not change once he gains office (unless perhaps we leave him there too long). If he is honest with us in the beginning, we will not be shocked by him later. The trustworthy candidate offers himself and tells us what to expect from him. The electorate accepts or rejects his offer.
The less than worthy candidate who changes his principles in order to become elected is doomed to repeat the process once in office because the thought of losing that office is even more terrifying to him than was the prospect of losing the original election. The less than worthy candidate is a craven coward.
The worthy office holder has a pact with himself to remain true to the trust which has been given him. This is the true meaning of honor (as opposed to self aggrandizement). The worthy office holder cannot predict exactly what he will face in office.
Being a true leader he will not make his decisions by simply testing the winds but by thinking things through considering his word, his oath of office, basic principles and the Constitution. The worthy office holder does not believe he has all wisdom but usually has the humility to seek it from his Creator. The worthy office holder will remain true to his Constituents but he will not pander to them.
