Real Golfers Don’t Request a “Mulligan” – Revisiting Obama’s Presidential Campaign Playbook Following the Democrat National Convention
However, before that re-visitation, let’s look at the golfing definition of a “mulligan”: “most simply put, is a ‘do-over.’ ‘Hit a bad shot? Take a mulligan and replay that stroke’. So as you’ve probably guessed, a mulligan is never ‘legal’ under the Rules of Golf.”
More about a “mulligan” later after revisiting Obama’s presidential campaign playbook.
Chapter I – Defending the President’s record.
Obscure Obama’s actual record as President.
- When impossible to obscure, spin Obama’s record to present his failed initiatives and policies as significant accomplishments.
- Never let a crisis go to waste (an Illinois addition);
- Attack Romney with false accusations.
Chapter III – Maintaining cozy relationships with mainstream media, electronic and print,
- to assure the media deliver Democrat claims intact while filtering and falsifying Republican messages.
Fact Check on my claims: Chapter 1 – all four “plays” are in full force; one, two and four were evident at the convention and are addressed in “Associated Press fact checks”. The third “Never let a crisis go to waste follows remarks about Chapter III. It’s a blemish on Obama’s record not likely to be addressed by Democrats or mainstream media.
Re Chapter III – while Obama and other Democrats are doing their utmost to maintain their cozy relationships – in a surprising twist from 2008 not all mainstream media are “delivering Democrat claims intact while filtering and falsifying Republican messages”. The Associated Press was especially vigilant during Obama and Biden’s convention speeches. AP was no less vigilant during Romney and Ryan’s convention speeches.
Now, to Obama’s campaign playbook: “Never let a crisis go to waste (an Illinois addition)”. “The 04020/2012 BP Deepwater Horizon Spill was the largest accidental marine oil spill in petroleum industry history.”
This oil spill was also the greatest political gift a U.S. president – who pledged in 2008 to “end the age of oil in our time” – could receive. Once received, he was determined to maximize both the spill damage and punitive measures to delay deep water drilling.
A different analysis raised serious concerns about Obama’s management inexperience and saw the Horizon Spill as a display of Obama’s complete lack of crisis management skills. Those views are presented in a video: “Day 70 Still Leaking”.
But, in the final analysis, Obama’s motivation is irrelevant. The spill could have been controlled much earlier and enormous environmental damage prevented by accepting the Dutch government’s technology and equipment offer on Day 3. However, Obama deserves an A+ for never letting a crisis go to waste.
Now, back to the Democrat National Convention; the 09/04/2012 “Houston Chronicle” Page A6 “Strategy” column “Better off? Answering that is challenge for Democrats” presented metrics of Obama’s record:
- Overall unemployment rate
- January 2009 – 7.8%
- Present – 8.3%
- Federal budget deficit
- 2008 – $455 billion
- 2012 – $975 (projected)
- National debt
- January 2009 – $10.6 trillion
- July 2012 – $15.9 trillion
- Gasoline prices not mentioned in the “Chronicle” comparison) January 2009 – $1.86
- September 2012 – Daily National Average Gasoline Prices Regular Unleaded
Given these extremely negative metrics for Obama’s presidency, Republicans asked: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” The most telling response to this question was from Marvin O’Malley of Maryland: “No, but that’s not the question of this election.” (Apparently O’Malley later changed his answer under duress.)
Perhaps Democrats preferred not to answer that question but what about the unemployed, underemployed and those who’ve given up on their job searches? What about college graduates who can’t find a job? Is Obama courting them with his implied promise of student-loan-forgiveness when he has “more flexibility” after re-election?
Also not in the article but VP Joe Biden again offered his bumper sticker slogan: “Of course we are better off; Bin Laden is dead and GMC is alive.”
Obama and Biden erroneously claimed in 2009 the entire U.S. automobile industry was on the verge of collapse but only GM and Chrysler faced bankruptcy. Ford Motor Company: improved productivity and vehicle quality; borrowed heavily; turned the Company around.
Ford is still servicing its sizable debt burden whereas GMC bond trading showed investors betting GM’s government-backed bankruptcy would create a company with a higher market value than Ford Motor Co., the only major U.S. automaker to shun a federal rescue. NB: Obama’s motivation was saving UAW jobs at GM and Chrysler.
My 08/08/2012 article “A Proposal to Determine if Barack Obama is a Religion Icon” explored the possibility Obama might be a modern day prophet. In his 2008 campaign Mr. Obama prophesied, channeling Jeremiah, lamenting the terrible events to befall the nation if a Republican were elected president. Prophetic statements abounded promising the bountiful blessings to be bestowed upon the nation by electing Barak president and giving him majorities in both houses of Congress.
Lo and behold, Obama was elected with those majorities but the bountiful blessings weren’t bestowed. So, if Obama is a prophet, he is at best a false prophet given the following fact checks on his and Joe Biden’s claims during their convention speeches.
OBAMA: “I’ll use the money we’re no longer spending on war to pay down our debt and put more people back to work — rebuilding roads and bridges, schools and runways. After two wars that have cost us thousands of lives and over a trillion dollars, it’s time to do some nation-building right here at home.”
AP: “The idea of taking war savings to pay for other programs is budgetary sleight of hand, given that the wars were paid for with increased debt.”
OBAMA: “We will reform and strengthen Medicare for the long haul, but we’ll do it by reducing the cost of health care, not by asking seniors to pay thousands of dollars more.
AP: “Some of the proposals the Obama administration has floated in budget negotiations with Congress would ask Medicare beneficiaries to pay more.”
OBAMA: “We can help big factories and small businesses double their exports, and if we choose this path, we can create a million new manufacturing jobs in the next four years.”
AP: “From the beginning of Obama’s term 3 1/2 years ago, manufacturing jobs have declined by more than 500,000. Manufacturing jobs have been on a steady decline for nearly two decades.”
OBAMA: “And now you have a choice: We can give more tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas or we can start rewarding companies that open new plants and train new workers and create new jobs here in the United States of America.”
AP: “Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s proposal is actually aimed at encouraging investment in the U.S., not overseas.”
OBAMA: “You can choose a future where we reduce our deficit without wrecking our middle class. Independent analysis shows that my plan would cut our deficits by $4 trillion.”
AP: “Obama’s new $4 trillion target over 10 years resets the goalposts with some fancy budget footwork. For one thing, it includes $1 trillion in cuts already signed into law.”
BIDEN: “After the worst job loss since the Great Depression, we’ve created 4.5 million private sector jobs in the past 29 months.”
AP: “This seems to be a favorite statistic … but it’s misleading — a figure that counts jobs from when the recession reached its trough and employment began to grow again. It excludes jobs lost earlier in Obama’s term, and masks the fact that joblessness overall has risen over Obama’s term so far.”
OBAMA: “In 2014, our longest war will be over.”
AP: “But analysts say the U.S. envisions a post-2014 force of as many as 20,000 American troops to continue training the Afghan forces (and) hunt terrorists….”
BIDEN: “What they didn’t tell you is that: the plan they’ve put down on paper would immediately cut benefits to more than 30 million seniors already on Medicare; the plan they’re proposing would cause Medicare to go bankrupt by 2016.”
AP: “Biden wasn’t referring to any Medicare plan of Romney or running mate Paul Ryan, but to the consequences of fully repealing Obama’s health care law.”
“The Washington Post” highlighted five of the same Obama/Biden claims and, as did AP, found all five factually deficient:
- phantom war savings (of $800 billion);
- territorial tax;
- raising taxes on middle class;
- deficit reduction;
- Medicare costs reduction.
So, there you have it:
- Obama’s dismal performance following the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill;
- four (4) highly unfavorable metrics proving the nation is worse off than in 2008;
- eight (8) Obama/Biden claims contrary to facts that reveal Obama’s 2012 campaign is a do-over of 2008. Except, now, his actual record belies his claims of significant accomplishments or future programs to improve the U.S. economy.
If he were capable of honestly assessing his record as President, Obama would concede his first term – or “shot off the tee” – hooked to the left and wound up in the rough. Now, he’s requesting U.S. voters to allow him a mulligan for his first term although he has no intention of his second shot off the tee slicing to the right.
Sorry, Mr. President but as said at the beginning: “Real golfers don’t request a mulligan.”
